United States of America attained Independence from the Kingdom of
Great Britain in 1776. Approximately more than 90 years later, France
headed by politician Edouard Rene de Laboulaye, keeping in mind of 1876,
decided to give a gift to America to mark the centennial of the
Declaration of Independence. French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi was
assigned the task of completing the sculpture. The project faced a lot of
financial issues and the statue finally got completed in July 1884. The
statue was then moved to New York in 1885. On October 28, 1886, the
'Statue of Liberty' or 'Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World' was
unveiled by President Grover Cleveland in front of thousands of people. |
